A Cry for Help that Must be Answered.

The situation of abandoned dogs in Malta has reached a critical point.

Over the last few years, the streets of Malta have witnessed a surge in their numbers, becoming a daily stage for four to six tragic tales of abandonment. While there are no official public records to validate these encounters, a grim estimate emerges – approximately 400 abandoned dogs, nestled in Malta and Gozo shelters, waiting for a lifeline. This estimate is based on the total capacity of dog shelters across the islands, underscoring the urgency for intervention.

It’s a terrible situation, made even more complicated as a significant proportion of these abandoned dogs belong to breeds often associated with dog-fighting or hunting, further complicating the situation.

Crowded animal shelters are grappling with the challenge of accommodating these dogs, leading to heart-wrenching decisions on which dogs to rescue. Unfortunately, older, larger, flea-infested dogs, as well as mixed breeds, are at a higher risk of being left without assistance.

The shortage of shelter space, combined with inconsistent procedures for handling unchipped dogs, has created a mounting crisis. The problem is compounded by issues such as overbreeding, the inadequate enforcement of microchipping laws, and the lack of regulatory oversight in breeding practices.

Adding to the gravity of the situation is the unfortunate lack of financial support from any source, not even the government! Despite continuous pleas and appeals for assistance, the vital financial backing required to address this crisis remains elusive, leaving animal sanctuaries and caregivers struggling to cope with the overwhelming challenge.

Individuals at the forefront, such as dedicated animal caregivers, have spoken out about the enormity of the problem. An animal caregiver at the AAA dog sanctuary went as far as to state, “the abuse in this country is like nothing I’ve seen anywhere else.” This heartfelt comment highlights the profound need for reform and support within the system.

Sheltered in Desolation

The distressing circumstances extend to the conditions within the shelters themselves. Animal sanctuaries in Malta are facing dire circumstances, with the conditions reaching a shocking low. The overwhelming number of abandoned dogs and the lack of support have placed an insurmountable burden on these sanctuaries.

Amid this distress, the AAA dog sanctuary stands as a stark example, where the absence of electricity stands out as a glaring issue. The lack of electricity severely limits their ability to store essential medications on-site, which are crucial for the dogs under their care.

As a result, caregivers are compelled to store these vital medications in their own private homes, underscoring the precarious state of sanctuary facilities. The conditions within these sanctuaries have become untenable, further emphasizing the pressing need for reform and support to alleviate the suffering of these innocent animals.

The Sacrifice of AAA Guardians

In the midst of this darkness, unsung heroes emerge from the shadows. Volunteers at AAA make incredible sacrifices for the sake of the dogs. Many of these volunteers have, in their words, “stopped their lives” to dedicate themselves to helping these animals. For these dogs, sanctuaries are often their last hope.

The driving force behind these volunteers is their unwavering commitment to the well-being of these dogs. They show incredible determination, never giving up on these innocent creatures.

Their mission is clear: to rescue and shelter the abandoned and neglected animals in their community. The volunteers at AAA focus on creating the most positive impact on the lives of these rescued dogs. They provide the energy and dedication that keeps their mission alive.

Their ultimate goal is to be the voice for these loving animals and to find them loving homes. The operation of AAA relies solely on the generous donations of the public. For them, rescuing dogs is not just a task; it’s their mission, and they are determined to see it through.

A Collective Call to Action

The situation cannot persist, and the cry for help must be answered. It’s not just a matter of responsibility but a testament to our collective humanity. It’s a call to pressure the Animal Welfare and the Government, demanding reform and support to alleviate the suffering of these innocent animals.

The heroes at AAA alongside other sanctuaries around Malta & Gozo, as well as the countless abandoned dogs are relying on our response. Who will be their voice, the catalyst for change? It’s a cry for help, and it’s our turn to answer.
