In this article, we’ll introduce you to the incredible individuals behind this series and share their remarkable stories of dedication, passion, and their unwavering commitment to our furry friends.

Leading the Charge: Simon Briffa

With over four years of experience, Simon’s journey in search and rescue began as a passionate enthusiast, initially training with a team for the sheer joy of it. Alongside a group of equally talented individuals, he took the remarkable step of establishing Canine Search and Rescue (SAR) Team – Order of Malta, that will be deployable across Europe under the United Nations.

When asked about his motivation, Simon’s candid response reflects his deep-seated commitment to helping people – “I guess I’ve always wanted to do good for people. I felt helpless when I saw tragic news stories of people stranded or suffering from natural disasters, and I always believed there was a way I could make a difference.”

His journey took an unexpected turn when he crossed paths with Flash, a remarkable dog that kept on giving. After Flash mastered the basics of search and rescue, it became evident to Simon that the next logical step was to take this mission seriously.

Flash: The Dog with a Mission

Meet Flash, the extraordinary four-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Shepherd (Malinois). Besides taking the center stage in our Canine classroom; he’s a hero in the making! With a personality that’s nothing short of remarkable, Flash may appear timid at first, but once you get to know him, his vivacious and playful character will leave you utterly charmed. Loyalty is his middle name – he’ll stand by your side through thick and thin.

Flash was the driving force for Simon behind the creation of our Canine Search and Rescue team. His unwavering dedication and high drive make him the star of our show. He’s on a mission, and his focus is unwavering, except when he spots his Kryptonite – tennis balls and pine cones ?

Flash is on his way to becoming a certified hero with Animals Saving Animals. His Search Certification is currently a work in progress. Flash thrives on his mission to work, search, and save people, and his journey is one you won’t want to miss!

A Heroic Team on a Lifesaving Mission

Introducing Malta’s very own Canine Search and Rescue (SAR) Team, a homegrown organization dedicated to training both people and dogs to provide vital humanitarian support in the wake of disasters. Established on April 15, 2021, by the Maltese Association of Sovereign Military Order of Malta, this initiative is driven by the founding members, including Simon Briffa and Joseph Sammut.

The Canine Search and Rescue Malta team is comprised of specialised units, each focused on critical areas such as Canine Searches, Rescue operations, Medical assistance, and rope work. This recently established Canine SAR Team’s primary objective is to deliver efficient and timely search and rescue operations, particularly in locating and aiding live victims trapped due to catastrophes like building collapses.

The Canine Search and Rescue (SAR) Team – Order of Malta are looking to reach out for support to fund their mission. To fulfill their goal of becoming a deployable search and rescue team, their team needs to acquire three USAR Canine kits to enhance their capabilities in supporting local civil protection efforts.
