Misa’s story begins in an unlikely place – a quarry, most likely her birthplace. During a storm in February 2019, tragedy struck. That very quarry flooded, claiming the lives of most of her litter and leaving Misa with an enduring fear of water as a young pup.

Fast forward to brighter days – Misa’s rescue and her new home at the Island Sanctuary in Marsaxlokk. It’s here where the story of Misa and her human, adventure enthusiast Bjorn Schembri, intertwines, changing their lives in ways they never foresaw. The bond they have formed will become the stuff of legends.
Bjorn vividly recalls the early days after adopting Misa. She had an intense fear of water and couldn’t get anywhere near it without triggering her anxiety. Bjorn remembers trying to introduce her to the water, however “ending up covered in scratches”. Yet he persisted, often nudging her closer to the water, attempting to ease her fears over time.
But it wasn’t a meticulously planned strategy that transformed Misa’s relationship with the sea. Nope, it all “started by accident”.
The Dive that Changed Everything

One day during their usual playtime, Bjorn tossed “a stick that ended up in a puddle of water”. Misa, surprisingly went for it without hesitation, which left Bjorn wondering if this was a one-time occurrence, so he threw a pebble into the puddle. Yet again, Misa eagerly dove in. This totally unplanned sequence of events lit the fuse for her boundless enthusiasm for leaping into the sea.
Who would’ve guessed that a simple puddle could trigger such an astonishing transformation?
From Fear to Frenzy
Her transformation from a water-fearing pup to an adventure-loving dog is nothing short of a marvel.
Bjorn reveals that nowadays, when they walk along the coast, Misa’s enthusiasm for the sea knows no bounds – stating that she “tries to drag me to the sea”, eager to take a plunge.
Her once-persistent fear of water now feels like a distant memory. Misa has now become known as Malta’s Diving Dog or as the public love to call her, Underwater Beast.
